Failure is not an option.

Have you ever met someone who was quick to give up? Anytime things get a little hard, they are quick to give up, or stop putting in the effort needed for success.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a teammate, roommate, or spouse, when a person checks out mentally, it’s only a matter of time before they check out in every other area.

Legendary Coach Joe Paterno taught my teammates and I that there is a moment in every game where games are won or lost. Even though both teams begin the game excited, and spent the entire week preparing themselves to win. There is a moment when one team will accept the thought of defeat as an acceptable option.  This is especially true for teams that don’t have a winning culture.

Failure begins at the moment that the thought of failure is acceptable. When things start going the wrong way or begin to get hard, losing teams will allow the situation to dictate the potential of their outcome.

This is true not only in games, but in life as well. Take a moment and reflect on times in both your personal or professional lives when things were not going well. There was probably a moment where failure, breaking up, or quitting became an acceptable option.

It’s at this point that everything changes.

Being a champion doesn’t mean you will go undefeated. Being a champion means you never accept defeat. If you happen to lose, it’s because you simply ran out of time.

Here are some 4 keys to keeping your winning edge.

  1. Embrace the challenge. Don’t back down from your greatness. You have the opportunity to do something special. Don’t allow how difficult things may be dictate the potential of what could be. Your marriage can be great! Your children can do well in school! You can accomplish your financial goals! It doesn’t matter how difficult it may appear to be, embrace the opportunity to change the narrative of our story.
  2. Be where your feet are. Too many people get lost in their head. They spend more time thinking about something, rather than doing something about it. Make sure you stay grounded and focused on the task at hand. Don’t let your thoughts drift to the point where you aren’t effective in making progress toward your goals.
  3. Focus on effort, not outcome. When things get hard, many people make the mistake of focusing on the outcome. The problem with that is that you will tend to continue to see the same results. When things get tough focus on what you are doing, and why you are doing it. Your output is a reflection of your input. If you are doing the right things, with the right effort, you will see the right results.
  4. Don’t let past failures influence future outcomes. When things get bad, it’s only natural to reflect on past experiences. The problem with this is the fact that many times, your past experiences won’t help you find success in your current situation. You see this a lot with losing team or organizations. The culture of losing actually has more impact than the actual team that they are playing against. Don’t allow the ghosts of your past influence the potential of your present and future. You have the opportunity to create a new culture if you don’t allow the thought of past failures to creep in.
